What Does This Mean?
Korean clipping of 페미니스트 (feminist). Often neutral in itself, but in Korean online culture it is frequently used as a stigmatising label against women accused of being feminists; some feminists reclaim it.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
"A columnist said '페미' is just short for feminist, yet online it is often thrown as an accusation."
LORE & ORIGIN
Plain clipping of 페미니스트 / 페미니즘. Korean press and columnists describe it as commonly working as a stigma: derived insults such as 꼴페 and 페미년 exist, and being called 페미 has been used to attack women, for example in the 2021 controversy over Olympic archer An San's short hair. The context is the 2016 Gangnam Station murder, the feminist 'reboot' of 2016-2018 and the backlash from around 2019. A 2021 article suggests asking back '너는 어떤 페미니스트야?' (what kind of feminist are you?). The date the clipping became a stigma was not established by the sources found.
