What Does This Mean?
An automatic notice sent to a site when another site links to one of its pages, so the author can see who is linking. It is a technical blogging term rather than slang, and pingback spam and forged pingbacks became well known problems.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
""A pingback showed up under my post telling me another blog had linked to it.""
LORE & ORIGIN
Wikipedia's Pingback article says it is one of four linkback methods, sent as an XML-RPC request that the receiving site checks to confirm the link exists. The specification was developed in 2002 by Stuart Langridge, Simon Willison and Ian Hickson (Pingback 1.0, September 2002). It is supported by WordPress, Movable Type, Serendipity and Telligent. The article says pingbacks are harder to spam than trackbacks, cites Akismet's 2013 report that almost 100% of trackbacks and pingbacks are spam, and notes a March 2014 Akamai report of WordPress sites being abused for DDoS via pingbacks.
