What Does This Mean?
A fill-in-the-blank praise formula meaning "nothing beats ○○" or "○○ is the best": the blank holds a favorite idol, character, food or anything the speaker is enthusiastic about. Appears in the fixed form ○○しか勝たん, with the blank filled by the object of praise.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
""After that concert, I can only say: his voice しか勝たん.""
LORE & ORIGIN
It is described as having started in idol-fan circles, where fans praised their favorite member (推し) with phrases such as 推ししか勝たん, and then spread to young people generally. Reports mention a tweet from August 2016 praising an idol with the pattern, and in 2020 it ranked first in the words category of a first-half-of-2020 teen buzzword survey run by AMF. Some sites attribute it to a Kyushu dialect negative form of 勝つ, but this is poorly supported. The pattern also drew criticism as overused youth speech. The existing entry 推ししか勝たん covers the oshi version specifically; this entry covers the open template.
