What Does This Mean?

[ SLANG ][ ENGLISH DAILY ]

A derogatory shortening of "script kiddie": an insult in hacker and security circles for a person who runs tools and scripts written by others without understanding them. It is used to dismiss someone's skill and is not a neutral label.

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

""The forum regulars wrote him off as a skid after he pasted a downloaded tool into the chat.""

LORE & ORIGIN

Wikipedia lists skid among the variants of script kiddie, a term it says appeared in 1988, and describes the label as derogatory for an unskilled person using others' programs. A 2000 Carnegie Mellon report cited there calls them an immature but often dangerous exploiter of security lapses. Who uses the word and how it is received varies by community; it is mostly used as an insult.
