XBrainrotTHE INTERESTING WAY TO UNDERSTAND INTERNET CULTURE

What Does This Mean?

[ SLANG ][ MULTILINGUAL NATIVE ]

Literally "local tyrant"; in Chinese internet use, a person with a lot of money who spends it openly, often on games, gadgets or gifts. It can be teasing or envious, and in its older, harsher sense it is derogatory toward the rich.

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

"Seeing him buy the gold phone for everyone in the group, a friend joked, "土豪,我们做朋友吧!""

LORE & ORIGIN

土豪 is an older word for a wealthy and powerful local figure, with a negative flavour. Around 2013 it spread online with a new meaning of a big spender, helped by jokes such as 土豪金 ("tuhao gold", the nickname of a gold-coloured phone model) and the call to "be friends with a tuhao". A news-tech article from that year notes that the word's once-derogatory sense was becoming more neutral and playful, and cites about 56 million mentions on Sina Weibo. The exact first online use is not documented.
