What Does This Mean?

[ SLANG ][ MULTILINGUAL NATIVE ]

Informal term for a secondary, private social media account kept apart from a person's main account, literally "back account". People use it for venting, hobby or fan content and other posts they prefer not to show on the main account, usually for a small circle. The label is neutral, though it is sometimes used for accounts posting provocative material.

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

""She keeps a 裏垢 where she posts only about her favorite band.""

LORE & ORIGIN

裏 (back, hidden side) plus 垢, the net-slang clipping of アカウント (account). Weblio says it is not an official feature name, that it spread among social media users and that its meaning shifts with context. It lists uses such as honest opinions, worries and fan content, and notes that such accounts can be exposed (垢バレ). A dated first use is not documented. It is related to 鍵垢 (a locked account) and ホビ垢 (hobby account) but is not the same: it stresses a separate hidden persona, not a privacy setting.
