[ MEME ][ ANIME CULTURE ][ FANDOM SLANG ]
A fan's beloved fictional female character, treated affectionately as though she were one's own "wife"; used across anime and gaming fandom to express strong attachment to a character.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
"She's been my waifu since the first episode, no debate."
LORE & ORIGIN
The English word "wife" was borrowed into Japanese decades ago as ワイフ (waifu); that Japanese pronunciation was then borrowed back into English-language anime fandom, popularized by a scene in the 2002 anime Azumanga Daioh.
