XBrainrotTHE INTERESTING WAY TO UNDERSTAND INTERNET CULTURE

What Does This Mean?

[ SLANG ][ MULTILINGUAL NATIVE ]

"Brick-expert"; an ironic homophone for 专家 ("expert") used for so-called experts who are seen as talking nonsense or serving special interests.

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

"Whenever house prices move, another 砖家 appears on television to explain why it was obvious."

LORE & ORIGIN

Chinese internet wordplay in which 砖 (brick), pronounced zhuān like the 专 in 专家 (zhuānjiā, "expert"), replaces the original character, so that an expert becomes a "brick". Dictionaries label it an ironic neologism meaning an expert who constantly spouts nonsense. It is especially used in commentary on housing-market forecasts and other public policy topics where specialists' statements are thought to be unreliable or biased. It is often paired with 叫兽, the matching pun on 教授 ("professor"). The first use is not documented.
