What Does This Mean?
Korean label for a generation that has given up on a growing number of life milestones because of economic pressure. 'N' stands for an open count of things abandoned: it grew out of 삼포세대 (giving up dating, marriage and childbirth) and later counts such as 오포, 칠포 and 구포 added housing, personal relationships, hopes, careers, health and appearance. Critics note that the label turns a class problem into a generational one.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
"취업도 집도 막막하니 우리는 N포세대라는 말이 괜히 나온 게 아니지."
LORE & ORIGIN
English Wikipedia's N-po generation article credits the Kyunghyang Shinmun special reporting team with the 삼포세대 coinage in 2011 (articles dated 2011-05-18 and 2011-10-27), after which the term spread through media and the internet. The extended counts (오포, 칠포, 구포, 십포) are listed there without dates, and the umbrella N포세대 form has no exact coinage date in the page opened.
