What Does This Mean?

やめーや

Brainrot Score: 4.6 ⓘOBSERVED
[ SLANG ][ MULTILINGUAL NATIVE ]

やめーや (yamē ya) is a Japanese phrase meaning 'stop it' or 'cut it out', the lengthened form of やめや with the sentence-ending や. A Yahoo Chiebukuro answer describes it as stronger than やめてください, close to やめなさい or やめろ, and says the speaker uses it in everyday Kansai speech. Online it is used as a punchy, often joking retort. Unlike the なんJ語 entry サンガツ, it is not documented as a term specific to なんJ.

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

"「ちょ、人の弁当つまむのやめーや!」 (Hey, quit picking at my lunch!)"

LORE & ORIGIN

No dated origin found. A Chiebukuro answer posted 3 September 2024 explains it as an everyday Kansai-dialect command; the question about it, posted 2 September 2024, came from someone who had seen it only online. Harada Eigo's なんJ語 page describes なんJ語 as spreading from around 2012, but does not list やめーや.
