Beiju

[ SLANG ][ WORDPLAY ]

Beiju (杯具, literally "cup and utensils") is a homophone pun on 悲剧 (bēijù, "tragedy"), used to comically describe misfortune or bad luck; it spawned a word family including 洗具 (xǐjù, "comedy," a pun on 喜剧) and 餐具 (cānjù, "calamity").

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

"I locked myself out AND missed my train -- total 杯具 (beiju), what a tragedy."

LORE & ORIGIN

It's traced to a viral clip of scholar Yi Zhongtian on CCTV's 《百家讲坛》 lamenting "悲剧啊" ("how tragic"), which was screenshotted and reinterpreted as a pun, then spread through Baidu Tieba, Mop forums, and World of Warcraft player communities.
