Traced specifically to the '5대얼짱' (Five Great Eoljjang) Daum cafe, opened in February 2002, whose operator collected photos of attractive kids found while browsing the web and picked a top five; the cafe grew past 400,000 members within about two years. Cyworld's 미니홈피 culture was a contemporaneous, parallel phenomenon, but the specific coinage is credited to this Daum cafe.
