What Does This Mean?
A gorilla shot dead at the Cincinnati Zoo after a child fell into his enclosure, whose death became an enduring, absurdist internet in-joke and meme rather than remaining purely a topic of genuine mourning or debate.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
"People were still doing Harambe jokes in the group chat well into 2017."
LORE & ORIGIN
The incident occurred May 28, 2016. The ironic meme treatment (as opposed to the initial genuine public mourning and zoo-safety debate) emerged months later via the "Dicks Out for Harambe" movement started by comedian Brandon Wardell, which is what actually drove the meme's mass virality.
