Huoxingwen

[ SLANG ][ AESTHETIC ]

Huoxingwen (火星文, literally "Martian script") is a stylized form of Chinese internet writing that mixes variant and traditional characters, symbols, homophones, and other substitutions to render text nearly unreadable to outsiders.

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

"Her old QQ nickname was pure Huoxingwen -- half the characters looked like they'd been hit by a keyboard smash."

LORE & ORIGIN

It originated in Taiwan around 2000, growing out of typos generated by Cangjie and Zhuyin input methods, and spread through Taiwanese chatrooms, BBS forums, and MMORPGs like Lineage before crossing to mainland China via QQ and MSN, where it became popular in QQ nicknames, signatures, and later Qzone.
