What Does This Mean?
A reply posted after a noticeable delay to an email or bulletin-board post, or the delayed reply itself. The delay is relative, with no fixed length. It is the counterpart of 即レス (immediate reply) and a milder form than 亀レス, and is often used as an apology.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
""Sorry for the 遅レス, I only found this thread today.""
LORE & ORIGIN
A compound of 遅 (late) and レス (reply, from "response"). The Digital Daijisen, as shown on Weblio, lists it as internet slang for replying after a certain amount of time has passed, and places it with 即レス (immediate reply) and 亀レス (a very slow reply). In forum use it often marks a reply to an old post. The existing entry 亀レス covers the more extreme "turtle" form; this entry covers the plain 遅レス, whose reading is osoresu. A dated first use is not documented.
