What Does This Mean?
"Pepe the Frog" is a green anthropomorphic frog character created by artist Matt Furie, used across the internet in an enormous range of reaction images to express emotions from joy to sadness. For most of its history it was one of the most widely shared, politically neutral meme characters online.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
"She sent a Pepe the Frog sipping tea to react to the drama."
LORE & ORIGIN
Pepe first appeared in Matt Furie's comic "Boy's Club" in 2005 and became a hugely popular reaction-image character between roughly 2008 and 2015, used across 4chan, Tumblr, and mainstream social media, and even shared by celebrities like Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj. Starting around 2015-2016, during the US presidential election cycle, specific defaced and recontextualized Pepe variants were adopted by alt-right online communities, leading the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) to formally add Pepe to its hate symbol database in September 2016 — while the ADL itself explicitly noted that the vast majority of Pepe's usage online remained (and remains) the original, apolitical joke-meme version, unrelated to hate speech.
