Originated in the 1970s as a Brazilian Portuguese pejorative for effeminate gay men, reportedly linked to the sound of high heels ("o barulho do salto alto"). Over subsequent decades it was reclaimed within Brazil's LGBTQ+ community, notably popularized in its reclaimed, celebratory sense by drag performer and pop star Pabllo Vittar, and today functions as a proud aesthetic/identity label rather than an insult. It shares no etymology with the unrelated English initialism "POC" (people of color); the resemblance is coincidental.
