What Does This Mean?
Korean gaming slang for a rare item, that is, a piece of loot that is hard to obtain or highly valued, from the English "rare" plus 템 (item). In many games "rare" is also an item grade, but the grade often does not match actual scarcity, so players separate the grade name from items that are truly scarce. Finding one is celebrated as 득템.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
"몬스터가 레어템을 떨어뜨려서 하루 종일 채팅창이 난리였다."
LORE & ORIGIN
A clipping of 레어 아이템 (rare item), with 템 short for 아이템. Namuwiki's entry for "rare" states that 레어템 is slang for a rare item or loot of that grade, and explains that "rare" is a common item grade that often sits just above normal, a case of word inflation, while Unique, Legendary and Super Rare mark harder-to-get items. No dated first use has been found yet.
