What Does This Mean?
作画崩壊 (sakuga houkai, "animation collapse") is a Japanese fan term for an anime episode or scene whose drawing quality drops sharply and loses consistency, with distorted proportions, unnatural movement or colouring errors. It is also used, less often, for manga published in an unfinished state. It is a criticism by viewers, and fans sometimes disagree on whether a given case really counts.

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
""Episode six was so rough that fans online described it as 作画崩壊 within minutes of airing.""
LORE & ORIGIN
Japanese Wikipedia defines 作画崩壊 as a state in which animation quality has lost order and fallen markedly, and gives typical signs as distorted proportions or perspective, unnatural movement and colouring mistakes. It names the causes usually cited as budget and schedule shortfalls, failing quality control, overseas outsourcing of in-between work, and wider industry problems such as working conditions and animator shortages. Fans nickname infamous episodes, for example ヤシガニ and キャベツ. Some argue that uniformly low quality is simply a series' style rather than a collapse. No dated first use of the term is documented.
