What Does This Mean?
Korean fandom term, short for 성공한 덕후 ('successful fan'), for a fan whose devotion has paid off, most often by getting to meet or work with the person or franchise they admire.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
"After years of posting fan art of the band, she was invited to design their tour poster and was called a true 성덕."
LORE & ORIGIN
Contraction of 성공한 덕후 (successful 덕후, 'fan'). Namuwiki describes four typical cases: turning one's fandom into a career, having personal contact with the object of one's fandom, being an already successful or wealthy person who is a fan, and becoming part of the franchise one loves (for example voicing a role). Korean news in 2022 described 'seongdeok' marketing, in which companies cast celebrities known to be long-time fans of a product, and a 2021 documentary film titled 성덕 reflects on its director's own past as a fan. Unrelated to the Sino-Korean 聖德 ('sacred virtue') of the same spelling, and Namuwiki lists other fan-slang abbreviations of the same shape. The year of coinage is not documented.
