What Does This Mean?
ソーラン節自由形 (Sōran-bushi jiyūgata, "freestyle Soran Bushi") is a dance meme from October 2026 in which people loosen the standard Soran Bushi choreography, familiar from Japanese school sports days, and add their own spins, jumps or K-pop-style moves. Videos on TikTok and Instagram often follow the pattern "since there is nothing else to do, here is some Soran Bushi" (○○だしソーラン節踊っとくわ), and many idols and entertainers posted versions.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
""The whole dance team posted their own ソーラン節自由形 after practice.""
LORE & ORIGIN
Model Press (14 October 2026) traces the trend to an Instagram post by the creator りょうくん titled "暇だしソーラン節踊っとくわ", which spread mainly among young people and idols, with posts from groups such as Nogizaka46, Hinatazaka46 and =LOVE. The post date is not given. Soran Bushi itself is a Hokkaido fishermen's work song, and the school dance version is said to have been created in the 1980s at a junior high school in Wakkanai.
