What Does This Mean?
"Little fresh meat"; a Chinese media and fandom label for a young, good-looking male actor or idol. It started as an affectionate fan term and is also used in a critical or mocking way, mainly in debates about young stars who are seen as famous for their looks rather than acting skill.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
"The drama was full of 小鲜肉, and critics argued over whether any of them could actually act."
LORE & ORIGIN
Chinese entertainment-media term for young, handsome male performers; the three characters are usually explained as 小 (young), 鲜 (fresh) and 肉 (body, appearance). Accounts of its origin differ: some trace it to Taiwanese talk shows around 2011, others to a translation of the English phrase "fresh meat", and these are not firmly established. It became widely used in mainland media in the mid-2010s, and critics, including well-known writers, later objected to it as sexualising and shallow, while fans treated it as open admiration of good looks. The related term for young female stars is 小鲜花.
