XBrainrotTHE INTERESTING WAY TO UNDERSTAND INTERNET CULTURE

What Does This Mean?

[ SLANG ][ MULTILINGUAL NATIVE ]

Korean internet slang for one's offline "real life": school, work, household duties and earning a living, as opposed to time spent on fandom, games or online communities. It is typical in lines such as "현생 살기 바쁘다" (too busy with real life), often when a hobby is postponed or dropped. Related slang includes 혐생 (hateful real life) and 갓생 (an ideal, well-run life).

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

"Sorry for disappearing from the group chat, exam week hit, so it is time to go live the 현생."

LORE & ORIGIN

The word is originally Buddhist: 現生, "this present life", set against 전생 (past life) and 내생 (future life). Namuwiki says the internet sense developed later and gives no date; online time is sometimes named after the community, such as 메생 for MapleStory. A 2023 Careet article uses 현생 differently, as a short form of 현금생활 (cash-only living) in a challenge, which is a separate sense.
