What Does This Mean?

[ SLANG ][ MULTILINGUAL NATIVE ]

Computer and gamer slang for someone who claims technical skill they do not have, such as a would-be hacker who only runs other people's tools or a player who boasts and plays badly. It is an insult in hacker, warez, IRC and gaming communities, also written "lammer".

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

"«Ese tipo se cree hacker, pero es un lamer que solo copia programas ajenos», dijo."

LORE & ORIGIN

EcuRed defines a "lammer" or "lamer" as a person who claims knowledge or abilities they lack and has no intention of acquiring them, a term from Internet slang that spread among crackers and virus authors in the mid-1980s. English Wikipedia traces it to the word "lame" and notes the Amiga virus "Lamer Exterminator" in the mid-1980s.
