What Does This Mean?
Having one's hidden real identity discovered, especially someone who was anonymous online. Used as a noun or with する/した (身バレした). It is a blunt colloquial term for the exposure itself, not a judgement of the person, and is often discussed alongside privacy precautions.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
""He stopped posting photos after a stranger nearly caused his 身バレ.""
LORE & ORIGIN
身 (oneself, one's person) plus バレ, the noun form of バレる (to be found out). The Digital Daijisen, as shown on Weblio, defines it as the identity of an anonymous person on the internet becoming known, and the page notes it is most often used when past posts on blogs or social media lead to identification. It differs from 垢バレ, which is the owner of a specific account being discovered, and from 晒し, which is publication of details by others. A dated first use is not documented.
