What Does This Mean?

[ SLANG ][ MULTILINGUAL NATIVE ]

Korean clipping of 실시간 검색어, the real-time search keyword ranking that Korean portals long displayed on their front pages. Getting a word onto the list was treated as proof of public attention, so fans and others organised pushes to make a keyword trend. The word is now mostly historical, since the major portals retired the feature.

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

"Back then a celebrity's name hit 실검 within minutes of any news."

LORE & ORIGIN

실시간 (real-time) + 검색어 (search term), clipped to 실검. Fnnews (2021-03-30) reports that Naver launched its real-time search keyword service in May 2005, Daum stopped its version in February 2020, and Naver ended its service on 2021-02-25 after 16 years, with political and commercial manipulation as the recurring criticism. It is the base word of the existing 실검총공 entry, which covers the fan campaign to push a keyword onto the chart; this entry covers the ranking feature itself. No dated source found yet for the clipping.
