What Does This Mean?
Korean abbreviation of 소소하지만 확실한 행복, from the Sino-Korean 小確幸: a small but certain happiness found in ordinary daily life, such as tearing fresh bread or lounging with a cat. It became a lifestyle keyword in Korea in 2018 and is still used for modest everyday pleasures.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
"Her 소확행 is a warm cup of barley tea and ten quiet minutes before work."
LORE & ORIGIN
Money Today (2018-01-28) says the idea first became known through the Japanese novelist Murakami Haruki, who in a 1986 essay (랑겔한스섬의 오후) gave examples such as tearing freshly baked bread by hand, a drawer full of neatly folded underwear and idling in bed with a cat, though the article does not say he coined the word. It reports that Professor Kim Nan-do presented it as a 2018 trend, which spread it widely in Korea.
