LORE & ORIGIN
An article on Woshipm dated 2023-04-28 describes 搭子 as a newer online social relationship built on companionship, with 饭搭子 the most common type; it cites a DT Finance survey of 1,431 people in which 82.4% had at least one meal buddy, and notes that 搭子 appears in a 2007 Shanghai dialect dictionary in the older sense of card-playing partners. No coiner or first use of 饭搭子 itself is documented. The general 搭子 pattern is covered by the existing dazi entry; this one is specific to eating together.
