What Does This Mean?

[ SLANG ][ MULTILINGUAL NATIVE ]

Korean fandom term for temporarily pausing 덕질 (fan activity), for example because of studies or being busy, as distinct from 탈덕 (leaving the fandom for good).

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

"She said she was going on 휴덕 until her exams ended, but she kept her fan account and planned to come back."

LORE & ORIGIN

Formed from 휴 (休, 'rest') and 덕질 (fan activity). Korean press explains it alongside 입덕 (becoming a fan) and 탈덕 (quitting): a 2014 TenAsia article defines 휴덕 as pausing fan activities for a time, for instance during studies, and a June 2023 Edaily column describes it as briefly resting from 덕질 for reasons such as being busy. Because it implies an intention to return, it is contrasted with 탈덕. The exact year of coinage is not documented; it is in print by 2014.
