What Does This Mean?
Korean internet label, mostly derogatory, for a person who gives long, unrequested explanations of jokes, memes or trivial facts, often draining the humor or sounding condescending.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
"Under a meme post, one user spent three paragraphs explaining the joke, and another commented that this was classic 설명충 behaviour."
LORE & ORIGIN
Formed from 설명 (explanation) and 충 (bug, insect), part of the family of derogatory 충 coinages such as 급식충. Namuwiki traces it to the DCinside baseball gallery and to a scene in the webtoon 꽃가족 in which a joke is explained and spoiled, after which deliberately over-explaining became a trolling habit; this account rests on one source. A 2015 Segye Ilbo column listed 설명충 among 충 words, noted that most 충 coinages carry a demeaning meaning, and said the origin of the 충 suffix itself is uncertain. Some communities use the word more lightly or affectionately for someone who helpfully explains obscure references; the 'Speedwagon' reaction ('help us, Speedwagon') from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is a related online joke. The year of first use is not documented in the sources found.
