What Does This Mean?

Byungmat

[ SLANG ]

Describes something absurd, nonsensical, or badly made that is nonetheless compellingly funny; it grew into a recognized genre label for comics, as in '병맛 만화.' Etymologically it's a blend of 병신 (a word with a history as an ableist slur) and 맛 ('flavor/vibe') — current usage is desensitized and generalized to mean 'absurd but fun,' but the root is worth knowing.

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

"The webtoon's art is deliberately terrible, which is exactly what makes it peak byungmat."

LORE & ORIGIN

Began specifically on DC Inside's 카툰-연재 갤러리 ('카연갤,' Cartoon Serial Gallery); the commonly cited originator is the webcomic '정재황' by user 무악공고, with the aesthetic further developed and popularized by user 잉위ㅇ, known as the '카연갤 병맛 본좌.'
