What Does This Mean?

Geili

[ SLANG ]

Geili (给力) is slang for something being awesome, powerful, or impressively effective; its negated form, 不给力 (bù gěilì), means lame or underwhelming.

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

"The new update is so 给力 (geili) -- way more powerful than I expected."

LORE & ORIGIN

It's traced to a Chinese-dubbed version of the Japanese anime parody 《搞笑漫画日和》, where Sun Wukong's dubbed line was "这就是天竺吗,不给力啊老湿"; it went fully mainstream after appearing in a November 10, 2010 People's Daily front-page headline ("江苏给力'文化强省'"), was named the top slang term of 2010, and was formally added to the 6th edition of the 《现代汉语词典》 in 2012.
